Pay Per click advertising
Pay per click advertising should be a part of every webmasters toolkit. It is a valuable way to get traffic and sales during those early days when your site is waiting for search engines to find, index and rank your site and many webmasters also find that PPC is profitable enough on its own to rate a full time campaign in addition to their rankings in search engines.
In general PPC engines accept listings with rankings for particular keywords based on the price you are willing to pay, the more you pay the higher you rank, although there are some refinements affecting placement.
Major Pay Per Click Search Engines
Google AdWords
The Google AdWords program places paid listings within Google's search results, with the ads which are shown are based on relevancy to the term being searched for. Adwords are also shown on other sites which pay for this service.
Webmasters have the option to use the Adsense program to have Google Adwords display on their own pages. Adwords is a sophisticated program and thus you should study the many ways of controlling both the keywords your ads are shown for and frequency of their appearance.
Overture is the oldest major paid placement search engine. It distributes its listings to a wide-range of search engines, including that of its owner, Yahoo
